Nitin Kumar, PH.D. - Director
Dr. Kumar is an accomplished computational biologist with over a decade of expertise in whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics. Over the past decade, he has held positions as a Bioinformatics Consultant, Senior Bioinformatician, and Postdoctoral Research Scientist.
From 2022 to 2024, he worked as a Bioinformatic Consultant at General Bioinformatics, Ltd, where he assisted clients with their genomics and transcriptomics projects. He provided expert guidance on data analysis, ensuring the delivery of accurate and insightful results.
Prior to that, he spent eight years (2014-2022) as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist and Senior Bioinformatician under the mentorship of Dr. Trevor D. Lawley (Wellcome Sanger Institute, UK). During this period, he led and managed multiple whole genome projects, focusing on bacterial transmission dynamics and pathogen speciation. He also contributed extensively to diverse metagenomic studies, analysing 16S rRNA gene amplicon and shotgun sequencing data. He has made significant contributions to the field of bacterial genomics, with 30 peer-reviewed publications and presented his research at prestigious international conferences.
Dr. Kumar completed his Ph.D. in Biology (University of York, UK) under the mentorship of Professor J. Peter W. Young. His research focused on leveraging whole genome sequencing to classify bacterial species based on genomic characteristics rather than ecological niches, and it was published in Open Biology.
